Vitter toys around with the truth

Vitter said he’s been working to “ensure the safety of the products our children play with.”

“When the head of the CPSC went through confirmation hearings in the U.S. Senate, I questioned her about actions the CPSC can take to continually improve the safety of toys… And I will continue working with the CPSC and on other measures to ensure the safety of the products our children play with.” [David Vitter e-newsletter, 12/10/09]

But last year, Vitter was one of only 13 Senators to oppose a bill toughening safety standards for children’s toys:

Vitter One of Only 13 Senators to Vote Against Higher Safety Standards for Children’s Toys. In 2008, Vitter cast one of only 13 votes against a bill overhauling the Consumer Product Safety Commission and tightening safety standards on children’s toys. [Vote #41, HR 4040, Passed 79-13, 3/6/08]
