Serious Sin

David Vitter denied allegations that he broke the law by frequenting prostitutes, blaming them on “political revenge.”

2004: Vitter Spokeswoman Blamed Prostitute Allegations On Political Revenge From Vincent Bruno. In 2004, Vitter spokeswoman Tonya Newman blamed prostitute allegations on hard feelings from Vincent Bruno, who supported Vitter’s 1999 congressional opponent. Newman said “the motivation is revenge because Vitter defeated Dave Treen in the First District Congressional election to replace Bob Livingston two years ago.” [Louisiana Weekly, 3/29/04]

2007: Vitter Admitted To “Very Serious Sin.” On July 9, 2007, Hustler Magazine informed Vitter’s office that the Senator appeared on the call list of the DC Madam, Deborah Jeane Palfrey, and Vitter came forward with a statement admitting his involvement with the prostitution ring. He said, “This was a very serious sin in my past for which I am, of course, completely responsible. Several years ago, I asked for and received forgiveness from God and my wife in confession and marriage counseling. Out of respect for my family, I will keep my discussion of the matter there with God and them. But I certainly offer my deep and sincere apologies to all I have disappointed and let down in any way.” [AP, 7/10/07]
