The Franken Amendment
The US Senate voted on an amendment (called the Franken Amendment) that would block the government from contracting with big corporations that prevented victims of sexual assault from seeking justice. David Vitter sided with the big corporations and voted “no,” claiming that the Obama administration told him to vote that way:
VITTER: “I actually supported the Obama administration’s on the amendment. The President, his administration, the Pentagon were against that amendment because it would extremely limit who they could contract with to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan.” [Vitter Town Hall, Baton Rouge, 10/31/09]
White House Supported Franken Amendment. The Obama administration has stated support for the Franken Amendment. White House spokesman Tommy Vietor said, “We support the intent of the amendment, and we’re working with the conferees to make sure that it is enforceable.” (Huffington Post, 10/17/09)
