Dishonest Fearmongers?

David Vitter claims Charlie Melancon made disparaging remarks about constituents:

My opponent Charlie Melancon called town hall meeting attendees “dishonest fearmongers.” (Vitter Facebook Post, 1/13/10)

Chalk this one up as a bold face lie. Charlie Melancon said Louisianans are tired of “the fear-mongering, the lies and the misrepresentations” from David Vitter at his town-hall style campaign events.

Monroe News-Star: The challenger criticized his opponent’s use of town hall meetings as a means for politicking, instead of discussing health care, the stated purpose. [Melancon] said Vitter “spent the first half lying about me and my voting record.”

“That’s what Americans are tired of, what Louisianians are tired of,” he said. “We’re tired of the fear-mongering, the lies and misrepresentations. In the end, they’re going to pick me.” (The News-Star, 8/28/09)
